STOCKHOLM — From 1 January 2026, people who were granted residence permits in Sweden on protection grounds can apply for a significantly increased repatriation grant, authorities have announced.

The repatriation grant is financial support intended for individuals who voluntarily choose to return to their home country or move to another country where they have the legal right to live. The measure forms part of ongoing government efforts to support voluntary return and resettlement.

To qualify, applicants must live in Sweden and have received a residence permit based on protection needs before September 2024. Family members may also be eligible if they meet the relevant requirements.

Under the updated system, the grant has been substantially increased. Eligible adults can receive up to SEK 350,000 each, while children can receive up to SEK 25,000. Spouses or cohabiting partners applying together can receive a maximum of SEK 500,000, and households that include both adults and children can receive up to SEK 600,000 in total.

Officials say the increased financial support is intended to make it easier for those who choose to leave Sweden to establish themselves in their home country or in another country where they have the right to live. The new grant system officially took effect on 1 January 2026.
