You can get a self-employed residence permit as a non-EU founder.
But this isn’t a startup visa.
It’s a strict viability test run by Migrationsverket — and it’s designed for stable, income-generating businesses, not early-stage startups.
If you don’t already have:
- experience
- money (both personal + business)
- and some level of customer traction
…your chances drop quickly.
This route works best for freelancers and established operators — not “idea-stage” founders.
If your spouse, partner or children are moving with you, you can usually apply for their residence permits too — but you need to show additional funds to support them.

Sweden is a business-friendly country with a relatively straightforward system for setting up a company. But getting permission to come here and run one as a non-EU founder is a different story.
The system isn’t chaotic or unclear — it’s the opposite. It’s structured, consistent, and increasingly strict.
And most importantly: you’re not being given a chance to try — you’re being asked to prove it already works.
If you approach this like a startup experiment, you’ll struggle. If you approach it like a business case under review, you’re thinking correctly.
This applies if you are:
- a non-EU/EEA citizen
- planning to run your own business in Sweden
- intending to own and actively manage it
Your spouse, registered partner, cohabiting partner and children may also be able to apply for residence permits to live with you in Sweden. This is part of family reunification. You must show that you have enough money to support yourself and any accompanying family members.
You must meet all formal criteria — but approval comes down to one question:
“Is this person likely to build a stable, self-sustaining business in Sweden?”
ownership and control
You must:
- own at least 51%
- actively run the business
Passive ownership doesn’t count.
reality check
This makes venture-backed or shared-control startups harder to justify under this permit.
experience
You’re expected to show:
- relevant industry experience
- ideally, prior business experience
Previous entrepreneurial experience strengthens an application, but relevant industry experience and the ability to run the business are the key considerations.
language skills
You need working knowledge of Swedish or English.
But here’s the nuance:
- English may be enough in tech/startup circles
- Swedish becomes important in local, service-based businesses
reality check
If your business depends on Swedish customers, not speaking Swedish weakens your case.
financial stability (personal)
You must show that you can support yourself and any family members joining you for the required period.
As a guide, the current requirements include:
- SEK 200,000 for you
- SEK 100,000 for an accompanying spouse or partner
- SEK 50,000 per accompanying child
These funds need to be your own and accessible.
If your spouse, partner or children are moving with you, their financial requirements are added to the amount you need to show.
financial stability (business)
You must also prove you can fund the business itself:
- startup costs
- operating costs
- or acquisition costs
You should be able to demonstrate that you have sufficient funds available to establish and operate the business. Personal capital is generally viewed more favourably than relying primarily on borrowed funds.
reality check
You’re expected to have both:
- personal runway
- business capital
credible business plan
Your plan will be reviewed in detail. It needs to be:
- realistic (not optimistic projections)
- structured
- based on actual assumptions
reality check
Overly ambitious startup-style projections can hurt you more than help.
customers or network (critical)
You need to show:
- existing customers
- signed contracts
- or clear, realistic market access
reality check
Having no customers, contracts, or evidence of market demand can significantly weaken an application.
this is not a startup visa
- There’s no safety net, no incubation, no “figure it out later”
- You’re being evaluated on whether you already have something that works
traction matters more than the idea
- A strong idea does not mean automatic approval
- Even light traction (customers, pilots, revenue) equates to a dramatically stronger case
cash is non-negotiable
You need:
- personal runway
- business funding
If either is weak, the application weakens.
simplicity wins
Clear, realistic plans beat:
- complex strategies
- aggressive scaling projections
regulations are getting stricter
Immigration assessments have become more rigorous in recent years, with greater emphasis on financial sustainability and well-documented business plans.
You apply through Migrationsverket:
- Submit your application online
- Upload all supporting documents
- Visit an embassy/consulate if required
- Your business and finances are assessed
If approved:
- You typically receive a temporary permit (around 2 years)
- Your business is reviewed before extension
reality check
This is not a fast process — and outcomes depend heavily on documentation quality.
This is where applications are won or lost.
documents must be in swedish or english
- Certified translations required if not
- Always include originals
passport
- Must be valid
- Your permit cannot exceed its validity
financial proof
- Bank statements (last 3 months)
- Proof of personal funds (SEK 200,000+)
- Proof of business funding
business documentation
Depending on your situation, you will need:
- company registration documents
- share register / partnership agreement
- customer or supplier contracts
- lease agreements
- purchase agreements (if buying a business)
- proof of payments
financial performance (if applicable)
If your business already exists you will need to show:
- current balance sheet and P&L
- last two annual reports
experience & education
- CV
- Degree certificates
- Employer references
language proof
- Certificates or other evidence
previous companies
If you’ve run businesses before:
- Provide documentation
This strengthens your case significantly.
Sweden isn’t trying to block entrepreneurs.
It’s trying to avoid:
- unstable businesses
- founders running out of money
- failed relocations
this permit works best for:
- freelancers
- consultants
- small business operators with predictable income
and struggles with:
- pre-revenue startups
- experimental ideas
- founders without traction or capital
- You must own at least 50% of the business and have decisive responsibility for its operations
- You need to show that you can support yourself and any accompanying family members for at least 2 years
- Your business must have sufficient funding to start and operate successfully
- A realistic business plan and evidence of relevant experience are essential
- Existing customers, contracts or other evidence of market demand can strengthen your application
- An initial residence permit is normally granted for up to 2 years. You must apply for an extension if you want to continue living and running your business in Sweden
- Approval is based on the overall viability of your business — not simply on having a good idea
- Don't think of this as a startup visa
- Don't think of it as a fallback after losing your job
- You need more than just a business idea
- Documentation matters as much as the idea

can I apply while already in sweden?
It depends on your current residence permit. Some permit holders may be able to apply from within Sweden, while others must apply from outside the country. Check the rules that apply to your current permit before making plans.
can I use loans as proof of funds?
Usually no — funds are expected to be your own.
how long is the permit valid?
Typically up to 2 years initially, then reassessed.
can my family join me?
Yes. Your spouse, registered partner, cohabiting partner and children may be able to apply for residence permits to live with you in Sweden.
They can apply at the same time as you or, in some situations, apply to join you later.
Their permits are linked to your residence permit as a self-employed person. You need to show that you have sufficient funds to support yourself and each family member who is moving with you.
This is a form of family reunification. It is sometimes informally described as a “dependent” or “dependency” visa, but the Swedish Migration Agency uses residence-permit terminology for family members.
important: The rules can differ depending on your family member's citizenship and your own residence status. EU/EEA and Swiss citizens may have different rights under EU free-movement rules.
what’s the biggest reason applications get rejected?
Lack of credibility, usually around:
- finances
- customers
- business viability
